OUR WOOD FENCE PROJECTS

First visit: Wood Fence Ideas & Design
During the first visit, the following steps will be taken:
- Consultation. We will explain to you how to turn your garden or backyard wood fence ideas into reality.
- Height selection. In most cases, we install wood fencing from 6 to 8ft high. According to Toronto regulations, wood fencing between neighbors can’t be higher than 8ft. At the same time, a street vies fence can’t exceed the height of 6ft unless you get special permission. The price difference for 6 and 8ft high structures is $10/1LF.
- Material selection. Most customers select pressure-treated wood for their fencing projects, as this material is more affordable and nice-looking. However, we also build cedar structures, which are about 75% more expensive. For example, 1 linear foot of 6ft high cedar fence of standard construction will cost around $125, while for pressure-treated lumber, you will pay $70. At the same time, both variants have their strengths and weaknesses:

Cedar:
+ naturally beautiful
+ serves as a natural insect repellent
+ durable – cedar fences withstand many weather conditions, even damp climate
+ sound resistant – being a porous wood, it absorbs outside noise.
— flammable
— sensitive
— fading color – as cedar fences installers, we know that over time this material changes color because of chemical reactions
— requires regular maintenance, as any softwood
Pressure-treated wood:
+lower price
+ easy to repair
+ insect repellent (termites will no longer be a problem)
+ durability – with proper care, it will last for many years, as it is able to resist rot, decay, dents, and scratches
+ environmentally-friendly, as it is made from natural wood
— requires annual maintenance
— exposed to splintering and checking with time
— fading – pressure-treated fences are exposed to ultraviolet rays after a while.
— hazardous if handled in the wrong way, burned, cut, or trimmed
So, it’s up to you to decide, what material is more suitable for your front or backyard wood fence. Whatever variant you opt for, our team will prepare gorgeous wood fence designs to enhance your property.
- Obtaining locates. It is required to check, where digging holes for the posts is safe, and estimate the posts quantity needed for your wood fencing. If necessary, we contact Ontario One Call to be sure that digging will not damage the utilities, which are buried below grade: electrical and gas lines, rogers, bell, water, etc.
- Posts selection.
Posts can differ in size or thickness. However, the most frequently used posts for residential properties are 4×4″. For commercial projects, 6×6″ posts are recommended for the integrity of the structure.
In the case of fence replacement, if an old structure consists of 6×6″ posts, we will substitute them with posts of the same size.
On average, the difference in cost for one post sized 4×4″ or 6×6″ is $35.
- Choice of Concreting Pillars. Our team can offer you two types of concreting:
- – standard – posts are placed at grade (permissible deviation from the ground level is 1-2″)
- – with a pipe – posts are placed 2-3″ above the ground level.
Concreting pillars with a pipe will cost $30 more per post in comparison to a standard method.
Only experienced builders can guarantee the installation of the posts straight, and exactly where needed, as this procedure requires much practice. Our crew is dead on installing posts into concrete pillars, so you can be sure of the best result.
- Selection of Wood Fence Types and Fence Options. Below you can find the most popular types of wood fence constructions and fence styles among our customers.
- Selection of Assembling Type: Nails vs Bolt Screws. Using nails for fence assembling is much cheaper than using bolt screws. On average, one linear foot of fencing assembled with screws costs 10 can $ more.
The reason for that is the higher purchasing price of bolt screws and the amount of time needed for assembly. In general, assembling one unit with bolt screws takes 3- 5 times longer than doing the same with nails.
At the same time, fencing products assembled with bolt screws are considered sturdier and more durable.
When we install the fence, we fasten the backer rails to the posts with screws and fasten the pickets to the backer rails with nails.
- Additional features. We also install the lighting and elements of décor for the fencing. We can help you with various fence inserts and custom fences construction, etc.
- Preparing a ROM estimate. Besides the above-mentioned steps, the cost of your fence is affected by:
- its length – the longer the cheaper;
- area landscape – big level variations require additional earthworks, like surface smoothing, etc.
- nature of soil – the existence of stones, concrete, etc. on the site.
Second Visit: Wood Fence Build & Installation
- Delivery and unloading of material and tools (posts and concreting mixture).
- Laying out and planning holes for the posts. Usually, the distance between the posts is about 6-8ft, depending on your landscape and the fencing length.
- Earthworks: digging holes minimum of 36″ deep and 6-8″ in diameter with an auger, as the freezing line in GTA is from 36 to 40 inches. When excavating such holes, it’s necessary to remove about one hand-barrow full of soil. Consequently, the number of posts will determine the number of barrows with soil to take away from the site.
- Preparing mixture for concrete pillars. For 1 post, approx. 1 barrow of concrete is required.
- Concreting pillars for fence posts flush with the ground (or 1- 2″ above ground level). We try to fill the hole with concrete to the top grade as high as possible to keep the posts from direct contact with the ground. It will prevent them from rotting and increase their service life.
