Interlocking Driveways Procedure

From paved sub-base to clean up you will experience the absolute workmanship of our crew in the following stages of work:

DRIVEWAY PAVEMENT Layout Setup

We set up the layout. First, we mark the site with white paint.

Then we create a square corner to work in using rope, stakes, and a laser.

Establish a slope to make sure the surface drains in a certain direction. A slope of 1% to 2% is sufficient for drainage.

Subgrade Preparation

Dig and level the subgrade to a depth of 9 to 13 inches below the final grade, depending on soil quality and anticipated driveway load.

Pile geotextile on top of the ground.

Lay a 6 to 10-inch base of gravel. We use 3/4″-0 or ODOT road gravel.

Gravel Base Leveling and Compaction

The gravel base should be level with no bloat or rise of more than 1/8 inch. To do this, compact the gravel with a vibratory plate. Add a little water. This will help with compaction and reduce dust. Compact the gravel 2 inches at a time until the desired thickness is reached.

Use a level or flat board to check that there are no dips or rises in the gravel.

Bedding Layer Application

 Place a 1-inch bedding layer. Clean concrete sand, small chip stone, “HPB” or “clear 1/8” chip may be used for the bedding layer. 

Install edge restraints securely. Use concrete or vinyl edging systems.

Paver Installation

Now that we have a stable base, bedding layer, and edges, we lay the pavers starting from the fixed structure on tensioned strings. We leave a 1/8-inch seam between the paving stones.

As we approach the edges, we trim the stone to create a perfect border.  

Finishing Touches

Fill the joints halfway with polymer sand, making several passes with a vibratory plate with a rubber pad on the bottom. Then completely fill the joints with polymer and compact them again. Sweep with a broom until the sand is 1/8 inch below the paver surface (depending on the pavers used and the manufacturer’s recommendations).

Interlock Driveway Cost

Our price for an interlock driveway starts at $15 SF. This price includes everything: design, materials, installation, site cleanup, and trash removal. The only thing is, you will be somewhat limited in your brick pavers selection, as this price includes paving stones in the sub – $5 SF price range. If you choose a $10 SF paving stone, the cost will increase by $5 SF to $20 SF. If you have already purchased brick pavers, however, the cost of our rough-in work starts at $10 SF. You can also take advantage of our contractor discount from stone suppliers, which can range from 5% to 20%.
